Exhibiting the Rite: The Perception of Medieval Liturgy through Manuscripts, Images and Musealized Objects

Ángel Pazos-López

Abstract

The Medieval Liturgy penetrated the life of the Christian man, becoming present on a daily basis in all spheres of his existence. The interpretative possibilities of the ritual past of the Middle Ages offered by some works exhibited in art museums are enormously wide: from bringing the general public closer to the Christian cultural dimension of a thousand years ago, to enabling new scientific paradigms to researchers in ritual studies. From the analysis of some paradigmatic cases of national and international institutions, criteria and reflections are proposed to approach the ritual culture of Christianity centered on medieval objects that are preserved and exhibited to the public.
